Life Technologies Grow microorganisms in culture, isolate nucleic acids, conduct real-time PCR amplification assays to amplify and detect RNA and DNA from pathogens. Work with different food matrices and help develop matrix specific protocols that can be used by the food industry.

Roche Palo Alto Work with scientists who are developing new tests, based on the expression of particular genes, to improve our understanding of respiratory diseases - particularly asthma - and patients' responses to new medications. Work in a research laboratory environment to optimize methods that quantify gene expression and assist scientists in analyzing samples from patients.

Stanford University Help with immunohistochemistry staining of tissue sections, operate a microscope to scan stained slides, and analyze the images using our custom image analysis software.

UC Berkeley Work alongside lab scientists to teach basic techniques in microbiology, biochemistry and molecular biology, as they pertain to the project. Work with laboratory scientists to help structure lectures and experiments to correlate to the background and abilities of high school students.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Work with researchers to evaluate ionic liquid pretreatments to assess their effectiveness in treating selected feedstocks. Their overall goal is to provide a fundamental understanding of how lignocellulosic material degrades in these environments and then optimize the pretreatment techniques.

Life Technologies Carry out experiments to validate quality of synthetic oligonucleotides.  Write reports on work done in the lab. Develop and optimize synthesis method for new oligonucleotide conjugates.  Design and evaluate sensitive analytical methods for quality control of synthetic oligonucleotides.

SRI International Work on a project to develop a new dye for use in imaging.  Develop a new drug for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. 

Stanford University Synthesize polymeric hydrogels that are being examined as candidates for an artificial cornea. Perform organic polymer hydrogel synthesis as well as measurements of physical properties of the hydrogels.

National Semiconductor Assist in the planning and implementation of the annual volunteer recognition event honoring over 100 employees. In addition, assist the planning of the Dare to Care Fair, an event in which over 70 health, environmental and community organizations share information with National employees.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Applied Materials Responsible for developing a marketing plan for an educational (environmental) card game targeted to ages 9+ and create additional curriculum for the teacher’s guide. Create original uses for the game and tie the developed curriculum to standard curriculum metrics (National education standards), specifically the emerging standards for environmental education.

Google Develop K-12 lesson plans that will be used with the Geo products to teach science, math, history and possibly other subjects.

Hewlett-Packard Co.  Identify opportunities available in the education market for mscape content, and design and develop an approach on how this product could be incorporated into the school’s curriculum.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory  Build curriculum and activities around energy use monitoring, energy and carbon footprints, small scale solar  systems and green building materials and techniques.

NASA Enhance the materials already available at the Microbes@NASA website to help teach the importance of microbes and microbial ecology to NASA missions and to the search for life elsewhere. The end is a new one week middle school curriculum in which the importance of microbial ecology to NASA’s goals is highlighted and placed into an astrobiological context.

NatureBridge Coordinate with education directors, program directors, and field science educators to develop, deliver, and enter curriculum for use in the field and on NatureBridge's new web platform.

Northrop Grumman Marine Systems Develop a light weight missile eject canister concept for the KEI Program. Main tasks include material properties information and suppliers search on light weight structural material applications; concept development trade study support; close-form structure calculations; and trade study presentation/report preparation.

Project will involve both scientific literature as well as material evaluations in the lab to assess expected performance in a laptop environment.

Pacific Gas & Electric Create a database consisting of past California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) inspections of PG&E’s electric distribution system.  Implement a document control system that will enable the Quality Assurance Department to organize its records and documents.

Symantec Execute test scripts against pre-released software. This includes inputting issues into a defect tracking system; verifying defect upon resolution; ensuring software meets specified functionality and parameters; testing on International Operating Systems such as French, German, and Japanese; troubleshooting software issues to analyze root cause.

Stanford University Work with Stanford team and Sony to suggest new capabilities for the client as well as educational content to make Folding@Home on the PS3 a better educational tool.  Develop educational content for the software as well as graphical mockups for programmers to implement.

National Semiconductor With product engineers, develop product engineering curriculum based on a needs assessment.  Collect the existing training material which is scattered across the organization. Review the various versions and update it to create a standardized version of the material for each course.  Identify any gaps between the desired curriculum and the available training material.

Northrop Grumman Marine Systems Assess the current workforce's computer capabilities, then work with Northrop Grumman staff to determine an overall training plan/schedule to meet the identified needs.
